Transforming Ego

“Only human beings have come to a point where they no longer know why they exist.  They don’t use their brains and they have forgotten the secret knowledge of their bodies, their senses, or their dreams.  They don’t use the knowledge the spirit has put into every one of them; they are not even aware of this, and so they stumble along blindly on the road to nowhere – a paved highway which they themselves bulldoze and make smooth so that they can get faster to the big empty hole which they’ll find at the end, waiting to swallow them up.  It’s a quick comfortable superhighway, but I know where it leads to.  I’ve seen it.  I’ve been there in my vision and it makes me shudder to think about it.” ~ Lame Deer, Lakota Shaman, Paraphrased from “Lame Deer Seeker of Visions

What is your perception of reality?  Do you believe that you are one entity, separate from everyone else?  Are you caught up in your needs and wants, focused on the external world and what you are searching for in order to be happy?  If this sounds like you then you are living from the perspective of your ego.  The ego is a very powerful illusion that the mind creates in order to make us feel like we are always lacking and the only thing that is important is our self.  When the ego is present in your daily life, then your thoughts dominate your reason for happiness or suffering.  It’s a feeling that you deserve something in order to be happy.  So the ego will drive you to want more and more.  The illusion is that even when we get more and get all the external ‘things’ that we ever wanted, the ego is never satisfied.  It always wants more.  The ego is concerned with your outward appearance – your possessions, your belief systems, your social structure, your success level and your level of negativity and cynicism.  So the ego is making us believe that these things are important and are what defines us.

The ultimate aim of the ego is not to see something, but to be something. ~ Muhammad Iqbal, Philosopher, Poet

To the ego, the self is what is ultra-important.  How do we look from the outside by others?  When we are caught up in our ego, these thoughts drive our reason for existing.  But when others define you they are limiting themselves through their ego.  It is only when we realize that this illusion is what is causing a great deal of suffering do we start to ignore the demands of the egoistic mind.  In order for our ego to dominate, we have to believe that our stories are what define our lives.  But we are not our stories.  What we experience is not what we are.  The ego confuses opinions and viewpoints with facts.  It cannot tell the difference between an event and a reaction to the event.

So if we are caught up in what we are doing rather that what we actually are, then we are living the illusion.  The way to transform the ego is by consciously being in the present moment and being non-attached to external things.  In other words, the stronger the ego, the more you are associated with time (the past and present) and the more it takes over your life.  Now this does not mean that we shouldn’t set goals or have aspirations, but the arrivals to those goals are not what are important.  This creates a projection into the future which is not living in the present moment and makes the present a means to an end.  Thinking that ‘I am not’ or ‘I do not have‘ is what will strengthen the ego.  Being reactive and complaining will only create a sense of right and wrong and cause envy and separation.  This will cause conflict.  The key is to embrace your sense of conscious being so that you become one with the universe, not separate from it.  This way anything that lies outside of your present awareness will not be important or necessary to make yourself happy and content.

“Ordinary men hate solitude.  But the master makes use of it, embracing his aloneness, realizing he is one with the universe.”  ~ Lao Tzu, Spiritual Teacher, Paraphrased from “The Tao Te Ching

Ego 2

The idea that we are all one and all connected is what will destroy the ego.  When you are aware of this simple wisdom then the ego no longer becomes necessary in your existence.  The problem is that many people have forgotten who they really are and believe that they are separate from everyone else.  This illusion of separation is caused by the limits of the five senses and is what causes things that we label as ‘evil’.  The belief that you can act out in any way that you choose without consequence is the reason that so many of our ‘problems’ exist.  If you can accept that when you hurt someone you are actually hurting yourself and that when you are helping someone you are helping yourself, then you are consciously aware that we are all one.  This is exactly how karma and Law of Attraction work.  Think positive, act positive and be positive and that is exactly what you will get.  Quantum physics has given us a model for understanding this idea of not being separate and is a great example of how science is starting to back up some ancient wisdom.

So with this idea that we are all the same, is there any need for competition?  If we are all one then who are we competing against?  This kind of awareness would immediately solve any number of issues that are prevalent in the world today.  This is why so few have so much and so many have so little.  The universe has provided enough resources to go around; it’s just a matter of distributing them.  But there are those that feel they deserve more and want control and power over all others.  This kind of thinking derives from the ego.  So the result is suffering and the illusion that we are lacking.  This is not the case.  It will take a massive shift in consciousness to create the kind of world that provides for everyone, regardless of whom they are and what they do.  Yes, this sounds like the ideas behind socialism or communism, but the reason those models are not complete is because not enough human beings have the conscious awareness to make them work yet.  It takes a whole new level of evolution, and we are slowly moving towards this state of being.

“Giving transforms having into being.” ~ Neale Donald Walsch, Spiritual Teacher, Author, Tomorrows God

In order to be in this higher state of consciousness and create positive change, we have to stop being selfish and greedy and start to readily and willingly give.  This means not expecting anything in return, but a knowing that what you give will eventually come back to you.  This is because there is only one ‘us’ and that is God.  When our souls were differentiated from the God source, we were evolving.  Eventually, we will evolve until we come back together as one, only with a much greater spiritual awareness.  This kind of transformation will only happen when each and every one of us comes to the realization that there is no separation.  So we must drop the ego, as the ego does not want us to evolve.  Realize that none of us owns anything.  This includes not only physical things but knowledge.  The free sharing of ideas and wisdom without the expectation of a monetary compensation is how the world can be transformed.  Instead, we use money and things in exchange for happiness and security.  If we can transcend this and provide for every being in existence, we could end poverty and world hunger in an instant.  But the idea that we must ‘earn’ these things or that because a resource exists in a certain part of the world that it belongs to only the people living there is what drives us into a society based on separation.  If some human beings want to receive things without doing anything for them, then so be it.  Their karma will eventually show them that they must give in order to become the highest possible version of themselves.  The more people become conscious of oneness the more people will follow.  This will create a rolling ball of synergy which will transform our existence.  This will bring us salvation, which is transcending the ego and consciously knowing we are not separate.  It starts within yourself.  Take an honest look at your perspective and level of awareness.  No one can do it but you.  When you do realize what we really are then the act of giving freely to other beings will become second nature.
